Context and Challenges

One of the largest pulp and paper manufacturers in Asia needed a system that integrated the MES and PIMS data from four of its mills, in order to have the information centralized and make more assertive decisions. The mills, however, had a low level of automation, with part of the data capture being done manually, and the communication between them was fragile, which made the project go through the following challenges:

  1. Standardize the MES layer in the four plants, respecting the internal procedures of each one of them
  2. Do the asset structuring, data collection and configuration of tags and templates for the PIMS system
  3. Develop a system that, while unifying data access, did not depend too much on the Internet, due to the fact that the bandwidth is small
  4. Facilitate data entry, due to the low level of automation and the existence of few desktops in the plants

Solutions Used and Equipment Provided

We made the standardization of the MES layer in the four plants, the structuring of the assets and the configuration of the TAGs and templates for the PIMS system.

We made a distributed system, without the data from all the plants being stored in the same source: even though the system is unique, the plants work independently from each other, only using the network when it is necessary to search for data from another plant.

We have developed forms for data entry using mobile phones, which has made it easier for workers to use the system. This development was based on new technologies, which we were not used to using until then.
